Apex Art Festival Friday Night

visit the updated website

The night before the Second Annual Apex Salem Street Art Festival and I'm sneaking around, hanging hitchhikers and installing installations...

OK , maybe not sneaking so much. It took me an hour to hang it all.

Plus, Rock, the director of the Cultural Arts Center, stepped outside his office and asked me what the heck I was doing.

My response, "Just placing this 6 foot tall monster on this bench here in front of your art center... but wish I had some chalk..."

This only resulted in him saying, "Yeah, I got some chalk. You have ten minutes... My wife is waiting..."

So I took his chalk and made some foot prints coming out of the sewer...

In the end I'm my own worse critic. What works is the monster. Why? Because he is incorporated into the space. He becomes part of the urban environment.

What doesn't work? The mammoth, which I worked so hard on. Though I'm sure it would make an excellent gallery piece, it doesn't make for great street art. Ok, so art and learn.

We LOVE art festivals. My kids would fall all over themselves trying to "find" your monster. It's great!

I think the mammoth works just fine. But, if you are at all like my artist/musician sister, you KNOW what you had in mind when you started. And if it doesn't match that image, it's still not "right".
