Lost Critter Project Part 2

the lost and found project

I'm sending the Lost Critter Proposal to Apex today. Hoping for 10-20 businesses to agree to a lost critter box. If it goes, that'll be 50 lost critters per box hidden in Apex this August.

See the Lost Critter Street Art Project to see how we did it with one business.

More Scribblism!

ian sands scriblism

You'd think I'd just about worn out my markers and colored pencils creating these latest scribblisms.

I'm using this funky sort of see through paper to create a layered effect. The marker and colored pencils are on the top layer, then the paint is either on the back or on another layer and i follow the whole thing up with a third layer of white paint.

ian sands scriblism

Are these scribblisms something you'd think I should post on my new Etsy site? or should I stick with the cut out stuff?

Text da cell!.... or just leave a comment below :)

The Ice Eggs Part 2

let's see what's Drifting By The Beach....

ice eggs beach stret art

We set up Ice Eggs Part 2 on Emerald Islands, NC. This was a larger project than the first Ice Eggs with a total of 7 nests containing 25 eggs.

ice eggs beach stret art

The nests were constructed by digging in the sand to form a platform and than a clump of seaweed was placed on top in the shape of a nest.

ice eggs beach stret art

Next, several ice eggs, which we had been filling, coloring and freezing all week, were placed inside the nests.

Then, we sat back to see how people would react.

ice eggs beach stret art

The majority of people took no interest in the nests at all. However, we created a smaller version a few days later that seemed to draw the curiosity of more people. The number one reaction was to reach down and touch the eggs. Most seemed surprised to learn that the eggs were made of ice.

Although people didn't seem at all interested, several of the gulls took a fancy to our nests.

ice eggs beach stret art

The fact that we placed Doritos inside the nests might have helped.

Watching the birds interact with the nests (ok, with the Doritos inside the nests) gave this the feeling of being one of our most successful street... or uhm.. beach art projects yet!

About two hours later the eggs were completely melted and the tide took the seaweed drifting back out to sea.

The Ice Eggs

let's see what unfolds....

ice eggs street art

I wanted to create a type of street art that would be biodegradable. Since I had a bunch of water balloons laying around the house, i thought it might be interesting to fill them with colored water and then place them in the freezer in hope that when frozen they would resemble eggs. I could have been more pleased with the results.

ice eggs street art

First, we gathered some pine straw.

ice eggs street art

Next, my art assistant arranged the pine straw to look like a nest.

ice eggs street art

Pine straw is an easy medium in which to sculpt nests.

ice eggs street art

The eggs were brought to the location in a cooler so they would remain fresh until we were ready to display them.

ice eggs street art

Which we did.

ice eggs street art

And the results were fantastic!

Then we sat on a bench and watch all the people stop and check out the nest.

Next steps:

I want to create a larger version of this project... more eggs, more nests. My freezer is full of water balloons as I type. I also plan to do a beach version with sand nests... check back next week...

Scribblism is Back

scribblism

We got a donation of some of the funkiest paper. It is sort of see through. The paper takes well to markers and colored pencil and paint so I was excited about trying it out. Plus it being see though gave me an idea. What if I took advantage of the layers?

scribblism

Like all good scribblists, I started with the markers and colored pencils. This is the best part because scribblism is so free. I just let my hand go where it wants.

scribblism

For the second layer I decided to apply paint. The paper isn't perfectly see through so the colors of the finished product will be slightly dulled which for me is a good thing.

scribblism

For the bottom layer I decided to cover the paper in white. This way I can hang the layers on the wall without a matt or frame, which to me would take away from the industrial look, and also without the color of the wall affecting the entire piece.

scribblism

This photo gives you an idea of the opaqueness of the paper.

scribblism

Here is a detail of the final work. I'm pretty happy with the results and plan to do more.

Craving More Street Art?

floating street art

The original idea for this project is called the Float Parade. The concept will be for a group of floating street artists to create a parade of art that will float across Pine Lake Apex, NC all at the same time.

This piece, the floating Deer, was a test run for the Float Parade which we will attempt again in September.

floating street art

floating street art

We took the Floating Deer down to the dock at Lake Pine and carefully placed him into the raging water..
Actually, the water was so still that at first it just sat there and didn't move.

floating street art

After a while though, the wind caught the deer and took him out to sea.

floating street art

And he went pretty far... however, we had tied him to a saltwater fishing rod and so in the end we reeled him back to the dock.

Looking Glass Cafe & Boutique
Carrboro, NC

Looking Glass Cafe

Having a show this month at the Looking Glass Cafe & Boutique in Carrboro, NC this month.

Looking Glass Cafe

We hung the show last Thursday. Carrboro is about 40 minutes from here and when we left it wasn't raining so i had the doors off the jeep. By the time we arrived, it was pouring. Luckily the art didn't get wet but we sure did!

Looking Glass Cafe

For this show, I created a few new pieces including the Signable Yeti which comes with it's own market and writing space.

Looking Glass Cafe

There are also a few new zonkeys that also come with markers and post-it notes. The ide is that people can write o nthe post-it notes and then stick them to the wall.

Craving Street Art?

The Sky Zonkey

We created this little zonkey and wrote a short note on his tummy. It read:

You Found Me! I was attached to balloons and set adrift from Apex, NC. Please take a photo of me and email it to: zonkeystreet@gmail.com

We took the little zonkey outside and then, as noted, set him adrift on the wind..

flying street art

We're hoping someone will find him and report back...

flying street art

He flew pretty high...

flying street art

UP, Up, up...

over the powerlines..

and then he was gone
