Hierarchy of Artists?
AKA
Ian Sands @ the National Gallery of Art
As it turns out, some of my art was seen at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC last week. That same art is now on display right across the street at the Hirshorn Museum. Here are some photos...
Highlighter Fox right next to Pollock.
Highlighter Fox right next to Lichtenstein.
Highlighter Fox in front of Ady Warhol because... it was just easier.
Highlighter Fox next to the guy I'm always trying to get my lines to look more like.. Kline.
Highlighter Fox next to Victorine Meurent as painted by Manet.
And then Highlighter Fox took his place among the other great art of the Hirshorn Sculpture Garden as part of the Wishing Tree.

UNCUT: And Trying to Figure it All Out
Does anyone have any idea where I'm going with all this? If so, please let me know as it would really help me out.
I mean, wouldn't it have been nice if someone had said to Pollock, you know, you should just drip the paint... or if someone had said to Mondrian, why not just break it down into basic shapes and primary colors.. or how about, Monet, you should really consider planting a water garden...
Don't get me wrong, I'm not comparing myself to Pollock, or Monet or any of them.. I'm just saying, as an artist, it would be nice if we could figure out the thing we are trying to figure out...
But then again, maybe then we wouldn't be artists.

POP EXPRESSIONISM: UNCUT Cont...
A little further along... working on a new series for the Halle Exhibit that opens this May. UNCUT will display as original paintings on uncut foam insulation board.
Now this one is really starting to get away from me. Maybe the fact that I know I'm not going to cut them out is freeing me to get a little crazier with the paint.. or maybe I'm just bored with the creatures... (oh, can I say that out-loud?)
Whatever my cheap excuse is, I'm having a lot of fun playing with the paint ;)

POP EXPRESSIONISM: UNCUT
I'm starting a new series for the Halle Exhibit that opens this May. UNCUT will display as original paintings on uncut foam insulation board.
We had to tie the boards down to the car roof in order to get them home. It was a challenge, especial with all the wind. First step, one coat of white paint.
The idea of UNCUT was attractive to me because of the uncomfortable feeling the pieces give having the creatures frozen in a sort of suspended animation.
If the creatures struggled to stay as art when they were in frames, how much more difficult is it for them to remain in the board?

Beehive Studios: Oil-Pop-Light Exhibit.
April 4-28, 2009
107 W Hargett St.
Raleigh, NC
Oil-Pop-Light is a three man.. well, two man, one woman.. exhibit at Beehive Studios. Beehive takes part in Raleigh's First Friday and the opening reception was last night.
I'm the "Pop" in the show's Oil-Pop-Light theme. The other artists are painter Lloyd Skidmore III and photographer Teresa Pigeon. Teresa has a photograph of an old boat that was half sunk in a pond. If you don't go to see my stuff, go to see that one photograph.
The exhibit is on the third floor of Father & Sons Antiques which is another reason to go see the show... old stuff that doesn't smell. You have from now till April 28th.
Also, just update the website. Check it out!
